We attended an exhibition for over 200 new diplomats at the English Speaking Union, Mayfair, in September. Some of the people we spoke to were: the 3rd Secretary Vice Consul from the Embassy of Ecuador; representatives from the Embassy of Ireland and the Embassy of Albania; the Minister Counsellor and Attache Finance from the Jamaican High Commission; the Deputy High Commissioner from the Embassy of Tanzania; 2nd Secretary, Political from the Embassy of Ukraine, and the Community Liaison Officer from the Embassy of the United States of America.

During half-term we shall spend two days at the Independent Schools Show in Battersea, and on Monday 3rd November we shall be at The Cafe Royal, Piccadilly, at the Expatriate Relocation Conference and Exhibition.

Southbank is delighted to be taking part in a pilot award scheme: Partners in Communications (sponsored by BT).

This is an online scheme based on evidence submission and self-assessment, which I will co-ordinate. It’s about “recognising that there are better ways of communicating and improving practice so that the whole school community benefits.”

It will tell our stakeholders that communicating effectively is important to us; it will provide a framework to improve our approach to communication; it will provide recognition that we are working towards and achieving communications best practice; it will give us access to a database of innovative best practice from other schools; and it will provide us with a directory of resources aimed at helping our communication improve.

"The Big Debate" on Teacher's TV (Sky Guide 880, Virgin TV 240, Freesat 650, Freeview 88) is a kind of Question Time for teenagers and this week focuses on "what being British really means".

Ian kindly opened up the Conway Street library to the film crew and the students last week. The students were posed the question "what does Britishness mean to you?" and they gave some insightful answers.

As is often the way with these things, most of the students succumbed to the ruthlessness of the editing suite, however April survived the cut!
