In class we watched a video on the heart and circulation of blood in the body.

In class we completed an experiment with alkaseltzer. Our task was to determine if a chemical reaction was occurring when alkaseltzer is added to water.

One test we completed was to determine if there is a temperature change during the reaction.

We found that infact there was a temperature change... it got colder. This is called an endothermic reaction.

I asked a class to think of a new experiment that could result in more or less of a temperature change.

In class we discussed 3 upcoming projects:

Students must design an experiment to compare the accuracy and percision of 4 methods for determining the average speed of a trolley rolling down an inclined plane.

Students will complete a One World activity that will look at differing points of view on science through history. More information will follow on this project.

The Great Debate will be held following Discovery week. Grade 8 students will debate the topic concerning the role of vegetarianism in solving global warming. This debate will be completed in front of the Grade 7 students.

In class we discussed chemical pollution. Specifically we looked at dihydrogen monoxide.

The class also spent time in the library researching another chemical pollutant of their choice to make their own informative brochure similar to the DHMO pamphlet.

The class was given the entire period to work on their Accuracy/Precision project.

The task is to compare the accuracy and precission of 4 methods to determine the average speed (velocity) of a trolley rolling down an inclinded plane.

The class watched National Geographic video called Strange Days on Planet Earth – Troubled Waters. The class was reminded that they may get ideas for their Chemical Pollution Brochure Project from this video.

The class was also asked to read pages 144 – 151 and respond to the purple questions in the Exploring Science 9 textbook for homework.

The class watched the National Geographic video called Strange Days on Planet Earth – Invaders.

Then the class watched the video called Was Darwin Wrong.

Both videos are directly tied to the curriculum and provide specific examples that can be used on the IB exams.
