Planning for Learning

IMG_0138.jpgGrade 5 students are taking an active role in planning our units of inquiry. This is excellent preparation for the PYP Exhibition, where students will be responsible for identifying the key concepts, transdisciplinary skills, profiles and attitudes that they will focus on during their inquiry.
Have a look at our video to see some of the planning in action!

Romans with Robin Price

images-2.jpegToday we had an author named Robin Price visit our school as part of Reading Week. Grade 5 students had the exciting opportunity to take place in a writing workshop with him.

Robin writes the exciting 'Spartapuss' series of books. He showed the students a variety of Roman artifacts to help inspire them to write. This was a fantastic link to our unit which looks at how artifacts can give us insight into the past. Watch our video to have a look at some of the exciting and creative story ideas that our students had. Please check back for some published stories in the near future!

Uncovering Roman Britain

r_silver_cistophorus_augustus.jpg
Historians and archeologists use a variety of resources to learn about and gain insight into the past. Have a look at this BBC video showing an archaeological dig at a Roman site in England.
What are some of the different sources that the archeologists uncovered which gave them insight into life in Roman Britain?
What artifacts were most exciting for them?

How Persuasive Are Our Students?

IMG_0480.jpgAfter inquiring into how our use of energy can affect the environment, Grade 5 students thought about how they could make realistic changes related to the use of energy in their homes. They were asked to carry out research and then present a well-structured argument to persuade their parents to implement an energy efficient action at home.

IMG_0454.jpgParent Feedback:

After listening to your child's proposal, please could you leave a comment about how effective this was and whether you will be implementing the change that they have suggested in your home.
You may like to have a look at the rubrics that were created in class to see the expectations of the assessment.
Many thanks!

Challenging Word Problems

deci.gifHi again,
some of you have asked for more challenging word problems involving decimals. I have found a few good ones that will involve strategies such as trial and error to solve. Let me know if you are able to solve this problem and how challenging it was.

It would also be great if you can explain in words how you solved it. Looking forward to seeing some comments here on the blog or hearing about your work in class!

There are lots of different routes from A to B in this diagram:

The idea is to work out the product (the result of multiplication) of the numbers on these different routes from A to B. Let's say that in a route you are not allowed to visit a point more than once. For example, we could have 3 x 0.5 but we couldn't have 3 x 2 x 5 x 4 x 1 x 0.1 because that route passes through A twice.

Which route or routes give the largest product?

Which route or routes give the smallest product?

Do you have any quick ways of working out the products each time?

IMG_0429.jpg IMG_0430.jpgGrade 5 students have been solving word problems involving numbers with decimals. They will create their own word problems and apply their understanding to real life situations as well. Would anyone like to share some examples of word problems that they have created or solved here?

Solving Word Problems Involving Money

banner.jpgWe came up with some steps for solving word problems involving money in class today.
5G listed the following steps:
-read the problem carefully (more than once if necessary)
-circle or underline the most important information
-decide which operation to use
-solve the problem and check using the inverse operation
-write your answer as a sentence

IMG_0550.jpg
The students then applied these strategies in class when investigating about financial planning!
In order to solve problems like this, we need to apply our understanding of adding and subtracting decimal numbers. Have a go at this game on the BBC schools website to practice your skills!
