PSE – Grade 7
AOI: Environment (London as a Cultural environment)

Your mission:
1. To answer question 2
2. To select either Q1 or Q3 or Q4 and to answer it indepth based on what you know, what you have experienced and what you research in your own time.

For 2 you will need to write 300 words minimum. For every statement you produce you will need to back it up with examples and evidence. Also information you gain from a book, online etc will need to be referenced.

Due Date: April 14th

Take notes on what you see in the Gurdwara to help you answer the following questions

1. How does the building (in this case the Gurdwara) reflect the beliefs of the religion it houses?

2. Compare the Gurdwara to the Synagogue (and the Mosque)

3. Does religion have an integrated role in (our) society – or is it separate and detached?

4. What role do you think religion will play in society in the future? Do you think religion will have to be ‘modified’ to align itself to modern living?

Take notes on what you see in the Synagogue to help you answer the following questions

1. How does the building reflect the beliefs of the religion it houses?
2. Compare the Synagogue to the Mosque and the Gurdwara

To help you with the comparison question
*In the stain glass windows - what is depicted? Who is not?
*Where does the congregation sit? Is it sex related?
*What special 'clothing' is worn?
*Is there security?
*Are the scriptures given a special place in the building?
*Do you sit on the floor or in seats?

This homework is based on the work you have done in class over the last two weeks (ie the Comparative Table).

The Brief
Based on what we have been doing in class (with your sheet to help you) please submit the following to your advisor via email or hard copy on January 30th (Wednesday) before or during PSE.

An important point to remember
As your sheet is based on the research of other people you should not automatically assume that it is correct and/or factual. Continue to research your answers using books, the internet (relevant and trustworthy websites of course!!) and (maybe) adults who have expertise in these areas.

Each example you use can only be used once.

Oh....and one last thing. Here is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of what we have covered over the last half term, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it your aim to stretch your answers beyond one word. We are interested in answers that have depth, provide explanation and have examples to back up what you are saying.

The Comparison (ie the stuff you have to hand in)

1. Something that all four religions have in common ('all having a holy book' would not be specific enough)
2. Two things that Christianity, Islam and Judaism all have in common
3. Four people that Christianity, Islam and Judaism all have in common
3. Four things that both Islam and Judaism have in common
4. Something that Islam, Judaism and Sikhism have in common
5. Something that both Islam and Sikhism have in common
6. Something that both Christianity and Judaism have in common

Please submit your answers based on examples from the following religions,
*Christianity
*Islam
*Judaism
*Sikhism

If you can think of more than the number of examples asked for, then add those in too.

This Discovery Week Evaluation Form is intended for students in grades 6-11 to assess themselves against the Areas of Interaction while on the September 2006 Discovery Week (Sept 11th - 14th).

Guidelines for writing your self evaluation:

1. Aim to produce an evaluation which is thoughtful, interesting and well presented


2. Use specific examples and details of events on Discovery Week to explain your scores in two of the Areas of interaction (AOI)


3. Choose one area in which you feel you did well and one area in which you feel you could improve


4. This self-evaluation should be between 200-400 words long

Due date: September 20th, 2006. Please print out and give to your advisor by this date.
