Data integrity, Validation, Atomicity, Date stamping, Redundancy

As far as you can, define normalisation (what is first normal form, second normal form and third normal form).

Analyse the following
In a doctor's surgery a database is being installed to store appointment details, medical records and stock control in the drug dispensary.

Research and planning tasks

For IT next week you need to begin your projects.
I'm setting two tasks for your production journal.
Firstly you should begin to fulfil your research obligation into the content and the layouts for your GUI (graphical user interface).

Identify at least two examples of sea-based pollution that you might be interested in pursuing for the content of this project.
Find some inspiration for your interface designs in existing information systems (minimum three examples), you will need to make screen shots and annotate these (saying what about each might work for you, and what the limitation are each for your design).
You should use these only as inspiration, each may provide a solution to a particular design problem not a complete solution in itself.
Remember to cite the URL (web address) the author and the date you located the site.
You must remember that sources that appeal to you may not appeal to your user group (your parents). You might find it useful to speak with them about this to find out which would work best for them.

The second task is for you to begin your planning - At this stage you need to begin making diagrams that illustrate the system of menus and how your user would navigate around your site (don't worry about the fancy stuff just yet)
A spider diagram might be the best way to approach this problem. This should contain as much as detail as possible about the actual content of each "page" of your site (you should describe this in terms of the type of info: audio, visual and other forms of material).
See this for a (very) basic example.

A further evaluation minimum 300 words

Due during your IT classes in the week ending October 15th 2004

This time I want everybody to read this brief carefully and complete their work according to its requirements. (this one will attract a grade)

Make an evalution of one of the following information systems:

A media rich website - one that uses animation sounds and menus to navigate - it must have a minimum of 30 pages.

An information kiosk

A console game

Make screen shots (use a digital camera or a phone camera if the system won't allow screen shots).

This wiil require detailed description of the systems and some comment on its effectiveness for its purpose and its users justifying your remarks by reference to the system.

Pay particular attention to the following:

Identify the main user group: age, gender, social class, education, language.

The appropriateness of the design for the users and the purpose.

The navigation system what are the limitations of this- eg most cellphones use text based menu (only useful for speakers of certain languages).
Is it a pain to use (like some cellphones - using a linear system of menus and sub menus, where theuser must return to the top level to do anything new, or is it like many websites which use non-linear hypertext links) how well does this work.

The physical requirements of the interface - what are the limitations of these for some users.

At all times in this assignment you must be thinking how could this system be improved - make some suggestions.

September 22, 2004

Week ending 24/09/04

Make an evaluation of the user interface of your cellphone (or your personal computer if you don't own a mobile

You should describe the main characteristics of:
1. how you navigate from function to function
2. what kind of graphical information your cellphone provides you with.

You should then evaluate
1. how quickly a new user can learn the interface
2. ease of everyday use
3. ease of navigation
4. adptability to your personal needs
5. ease of personalisation
6. access for users with physical or sensory impairment
7. actractiveness

I expect this piece of work to be continuous prose (something resembling an essay) minimum 300 words

This assignment is due at the beginning of your IT class during the week ending 1st October 2004

Weeks ending 11/09/04

Make a list of the ten (10) core functions of a computer operating system
you might try hyperdictionary for some help.

This homework is due at the beginning of your IT class during the week ending 24/09/04
