Following last year's successful pilot with Grade 4 and K classes, all students at Southbank Hampstead from K through 5 are currently engaged in developing their own electronic portfolios which you are now able to access using the links below.
What is the guiding rationale behind their implementation?
Digital media allows our students to represent their learning in a much broader and more creative sense than traditional 'pen and paper' portfolios. As you will witness, Mathematical problem solving, art work or writing samples can be scanned and uploaded; a presentation in Spanish or a reading activity in a child's home language can be recorded and shared; the dynamism of collaborative activities such as PE and Music can be captured through video. These are but a few examples of how electronic portfolios allow for a much more comprehensive overview of a child's learning journey.
Developing e-portfolios has provided our students, and teachers, with a wonderfully authentic context to develop higher level IT skills including web-site design, photo and video editing, graphics manipulation and music technology.
Hosting electronic portfolios on a website also allows our students to share their learning journey with a global audience- Parents have already been issued with a password to share with friends and family wherever they might be which will allow them to access their child's portfolio. This serves as a wonderful inspiration for the students in an international school such as ours.
The portfolios will also serve as an important aspect of our approach to assessment. Students are encouraged in developmentally appropriate ways to be reflective about what they choose to add to their portfolio, taking direct ownership of their learning through the process of collecting, selecting and reflecting
E-portfolios are not simply repositories for 'best work', rather they provide an opportunity for our students to grow metacognitively and can be seen as a digital 'story' of a child's learning over time.
It should be stressed that the children are responsible for the design, management and maintenance of their portfolio. They are by no means 'finished products' and should be viewed very much as a 'work in progress'. Taking into account the developmental stage, age and language ability. Spelling, grammar and punctuation may not always be 'word perfect'.
Follow the links below to your child's class and name. You will then be asked to enter your password.
It is hoped that your viewing of the portfolios will further strengthen the relationship between our students, teachers and their parents as partners in a learning community. To this end we really would value your input. Please leave comments and feedback in our electronic portfolios blog.
